For a long time, Alicia and Craig Oberg disliked their house so much that they didn’t want to invite anyone over. “We were actually embarrassed,” Ms. Oberg said of the house in Plymouth, Minn., which had a dated 1990s interior that “was just so far from what we felt our aesthetic was.”But the 3,800-square-foot ranch house, built in 1981, had a few things going for it. For one, there was plenty of space: The couple, whose twins are now 14, bought it in August 2013 for $584,000, after outgrowing their previous home. And they loved the bucolic setting, between a horse farm and a small lake, but just 15 minutes from the center of Minneapolis.

London CNN —An unexploded bomb from World War II has been taken out to sea and detonated after being found in a garden in the English city of Plymouth, authorities said Friday. The decision to detonate the bomb at sea was taken “after considering all options, including a controlled detonation on site,” according to a government statement. This war-time bomb has really brought out war-time spirit, people coming together to really support each other and whilst it has been really tough – we got through it,” said Tudor Evans, leader of Plymouth City Council. Evans thanked the bomb experts for their bravery and for “putting their lives on the line” while they were removing the bomb. The device was discovered on Tuesday in a garden, the Plymouth City Council said in a post on social media.

MILAN, N.H. (AP) — Some of the Northeast’s best young ski jumpers took flight at the country’s oldest ski club on Sunday, continuing a comeback for the once-popular winter sport featuring speed, skill and sometimes spills. The Eastern Ski Jumping Meet took place at the Nansen Ski Club in the shadow of one of the nation's oldest jumps during Milan’s 102nd annual winter carnival in northern New Hampshire. They built the 172-foot (51-meter) “Big Nansen” jump in 1937 with government help and hosted Olympic trials a year later. In 2011 ski jumping returned to the collegiate level, welcoming women jumpers for the first time. Most of the people I see at (ski jump) clubs, especially the younger kids, are mostly girls,” she said.

Patrick Kane is joining the Detroit Red Wings for the rest of the season, choosing the championship-rich franchise over other suitors for the four-time All-Star's return to the NHL from hip surgery. After the Blackhawks and New York Rangers he joined after a pre-deadline trade, the Red Wings are set to become Kane’s third Original Six team. Kane had similar control as a free agent, letting the market and the first month of the season play out before talking to interested teams. The Red Wings and Blackhawks were longtime, bitter rivals until Detroit was shifted from the Western to the Eastern Conference in 2013 as part of realignment. War in the Middle East has prompted officials to take extra precautions at airports and shopping malls across the United States and along the route of New York's signature Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. A quintessential American rite, Thanksgiving brings together family and friends for turkey dinner and watching the parade and American football on TV. It also marks the most intense week of the year for travel and start of the holiday shopping season on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. but slower economic demand has retailers concerned that the holiday season could prove lackluster. But the turkeys-beware holiday gets its own namesake movie with Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” featuring an ensemble cast that includes Addison Rae, Patrick Dempsey and Gina Gershon. In a recent phone interview, Roth said that he and Jeff Rendell, a childhood friend and his screenwriter on the new film, have been itching to make a Thanksgiving scary movie since they were kids. “There was that lull between October and mid-December when it was all family films,” said Roth, who’s from Newton, Mass. “We were just waiting for another horror movie to come out.

Children need to do more physical and practical work at school, and schools need to integrate more movement into students’ routines. Attending Back to School Night at my son’s middle school, I was saddened to see that instruction is done mostly via large screens and that the students have no recess. Today’s students could surely benefit by learning practical life skills like home ec and shop.
